Puppet Master EQ (PMEQ)

The PMEQ is a 3-band semi-parametric EQ that is based on the Aphex EQF-2 settings that was used on Metallica's Master of Puppets.

The PMEQ is based on the settings used on the Aphex EQF-2 parametric EQ.

On Master of Puppets, the Aphex EQF-2 was configured for boosting low frequencies, cutting mid frequencies, and a high shelf filter.  These settings have been captured in the PMEQ.

Controls for each frequency band include: low frequency boost, mid frequency cut, and high shelf level along with selectable low, mid, and high frequencies.

Low Frequency range: 25-500Hz, up to 12dB boost.

Mid Frequency range: 250 - 5000 Hz, up to 12dB cut.

High Frequency range: 1 - 20 kHz, up to 12dB boost.

The pedal uses a standard boss-style 9V power supply (2.1mm, center negative) with a minimum 100mA current supply.  Using a power supply greater than 9V may void your warranty.  There is an internal charge pump to supply the circuit with ±15V power. That's 30V of headroom to ensure that your signal will not clip or distort.

August 2024 update:  This is the "version 2" of the PMEQ. The main changes from v1 are

- frequency markers on the FREQ controls

- added the buffer that is present in the original EQF-2 into the signal chain before the EQ stages. This ensures more consistent behaviour of the pedal when used with different kinds of equipment (eg tube and solid state amp FX loops, pedalboards, modellers, etc). The pedal is still true bypass and the buffer is only in the signal chain when the pedal is engaged.

- corrected a design issue present in the original EQ that would sometimes result in the high shelf band oscillating and making strange noises when used with some amps. This change does not affect the tone of the EQ stage at all.

Each pedal uses a professionally manufactured PCB and is proudly assembled by hand in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Each pedal comes with a 1 year warranty on parts and labour. Note that the warranty does not cover damage due to using an improper power supply or other misuse.  We strongly recommend using a regulated 9V DC power supply.
